Insurance Linked Feature in Nav(0-1)

Project Overview

Team: Product Designer, UX Researcher and Cartography Designer , PM , Development teams across time zones

Novo is a new insurance brand from Telenav, focused on offering car insurance to people who drive safely. With Scout Map’s 5 million active users across cars and mobile devices, we see a
major opportunity: if we can identify safe drivers or help drivers with riskier habits improve so we can unlock valuable upsell potential for Novo Insurance directly through Scout.

This project introduces a navigation safety feature designed to guide users toward safer routes, improve realtime driving decisions, and support insurance linked behavior rewards. By combining navigation insights with insurance incentives, we aim to create a win-win experience for both users and the business.

Business Goal

Promote safer driving habits to support future Novo Insurance upsell opportunities and deepen user trust and engagement within the Scout Navigation ecosystem.

User Impact Goal

Help users drive more safely and unlock potential lower insurance rates based on their safe driving behavior.

Target Users

  • Safety-Conscious Drivers
  • Parents / Caregivers
  • New / Inexperienced Drivers
  • Drivers with Prior Incidents or Insurance Sensitivity

Design Process

Research Key Insights

This survey is based on responses from over 600 participants using the Qualtrics platform, exploring attitudes and behaviors related to driving safety and monitoring. It covered demographic and driving history data, attitudes toward driving, interest in behavior insights, and reactions to data tracking for rewards.

Design Scope

With these insights, I ran empathy mapping, “How Might We” framing, and collaborative ideation.

This led us to narrow the product scope to two focused design directions:

And for Navigation, we decide to focused on the #2

#1

How Might We help user Understanding & Improving
Driving Behavior?

#2

How Might We Providing Safer Navigation Support?

MVP Testing

To decide whether to invest more resources, we first ran a live MVP test to validate user interest, understanding, and adoption of safer route features in real-world driving situations. This test served as a behavioral validation phase, not just to capture what users say about safety, but to observe what they actually do when presented with safer options in high-traffic or time-sensitive moments.

Key Insights & Feedback

We analyzed pilot feedback on trust, clarity, and time vs. safety trade-offs to refine the feature and shape the official launch.

Design Problems

After that, I define the design problems and facilitate ideation with the team.

Design Wireframes and iterations

Final Outcome

Achieved a 46%+ Navigation Feature adoption rate and significantly increased user safety awareness during pilot testing.
